Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is AquaChar?

AquaChar is a proprietary, graphene-related filtration media made from recycled hardwood. It is designed to help keep aquarium, pond and hydroponic water clear and stable while giving beneficial microbes a place to live.

2. How is AquaChar different from activated carbon?

Activated carbon works mainly by adsorption. AquaChar is a graphene-related media with engineered surface chemistry and a surface where beneficial bacteria can colonize. We have not tested it against every activated carbon product on every contaminant. The Science page lists what independent labs have measured.

3. What is B.A.M.S.™ technology?

B.A.M.S.™ stands for Biologically Active Microsites. This technology creates electrostatically charged zones within AquaChar that feed and activate beneficial microbes, turning your filter into a biological regeneration zone, not just a passive sponge.

4. What size tank is each package ideal for?

At 1 gram per gallon, Small (10 g) suits tanks up to 10 gallons, Medium (20 g) up to 20 gallons and Large (40 g, the same as our earlier 1 cup) up to 40 gallons. AquaChar can also be used in ponds, hydroponics, and aquaponics systems. Safe for all species. See the tank size guide for larger tanks.

5. How long does AquaChar last?

Each dose of AquaChar lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on your water conditions. Unlike cartridges, it doesn’t expire all at once, and there's no guesswork. You'll often notice the water begins to cloud slightly when it's time to replace.

6. How do I use it?

  1. Rinse gently before use.
  2. Place in a mesh bag in a high-flow zone of your tank or system.
  3. Leave for up to 3 to 6 months.
  4. When replacing, leave the old AquaChar in with the new for 1 month to allow bacteria to acclimate.
  5. After use, repurpose in your garden or compost. It’s 100% safe and beneficial for soil.

7. What kind of results can I expect?

  • Visibly clearer water in just a few days
  • Stable pH and reduced chemical stress
  • Healthier, happier fish and plants
  • Longer-lasting balance with less maintenance

Don’t just take our word for it. AquaChar has been tested and verified by independent labs and universities. Explore the research here:

8. Is it reef safe?

Yes! AquaChar is 100% reef safe and has been used by hobbyists to stabilize sensitive coral systems. It supports microbial health without leaching or stripping trace elements.

9. Is AquaChar sustainable?

Absolutely. It’s made from recycled hardwood, requires no replacement cartridges, and can be safely returned to the earth after use. Simply toss it into your garden or compost when done. It keeps working for the planet.

10. Does AquaChar eliminate ammonia spikes?

It may support biological filtration, but it is not an instant cure. Ammonia control needs an established nitrogen cycle, sensible stocking and feeding, oxygen and water testing. If ammonia or nitrite rises, act right away instead of relying on filter media alone.

11. Can I use AquaChar with tap water?

Yes. Our AquaChar® 3-Pack + Water Filter Pitcher bundle is designed as a mineralizer and pH balancer for tap water. It is not sold as a drinking-water treatment, so please keep following your local water guidance. AquaChar is also filter media for aquariums, ponds and hydroponics. Check back here for updates as we keep developing new products.

12. Does AquaChar replace water changes?

No. Water changes and testing may still be needed to manage dissolved waste, minerals and overall tank health.
